Stephen Harding

Stephen Harding
(d. 1134)
   Order Founder and Saint.
Stephen was born in Dorset. He became a monk at Molême, Burgundy, but did not find the regime strict enough. With twenty others, he established a new house at Citeaux and was elected successively Sub-Prior, Prior and Abbot. In 1112 St bernard joined the community with thirty others and new houses had to be founded. Stephen drew up much of the Carta Cantatis, the constitution of the Cistercian Order, which was presented to Pope Callistus II in 1119. He is also thought to have been responsible for introducing the famous white habit.
